Business Context
Hitachi Information Control Systems Europe (HICSE) is looking to recruit a forward thinking, strategic focused Head of Research and Development as it enters a new phase of growth in the areas of Traffic Management Systems and Information Communication Technologies. The role will be focused on leading the company, across it’s multiple UK sites, in the development of new research and development strategies to capture new business and ensure internal development is geared towards meeting strategic aims, in terms of timescales and costs. The role will involve working broadly with other Hitachi group companies, academia and industry partners to position HICSE to grow its existing product portfolio. We have offices in Bradford on Avon and Derby, and there is also the possibility for this role to be home based.
Responsible for the development & delivery of the company strategy with respect to research & development of technical projects and products to internal and external customers. This includes delivery of research projects, new products and changes to existing products.
Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer the main responsibilities of the role shall include but not be limited to:
  • Leadership of the Research & Development department
  • Working with Sales & Business Development, Hitachi Group Companies, Customers & Academia to develop the Research & Development strategy for delivering the company strategy
  • Provide vision and plan for shaping the company to delivering future pipeline growth
  • Ensuring that work is done in line with company processes and industry standards.
  • Ensuring resource levels, competencies, skills and knowledge are in place and balanced to support achievement of R&D targets across Research, Development, supporting of Bids & Proposals workstreams
  • Accountable for budget, schedule, scope, quality and delivery of all R&D projects.
  • Building the delivery structure for R&D project
  • Leading the R&D team to meet the company strategy through ‘business as usual’ tasks and project delivery.
  • Development and management of the R&D Governance and Plans
  • Driving continuous improvements to R&D processes both internally to the department and pan business
  • Line management and career development responsibilities
  • Ensuring the department is using industry best practice in the delivery of projects and products.
Achieving success in the role will be indicated by performance on tasks such as:
  • Cost Centre
    • Line management of staff including succession planning, talent management, identification and management of resourcing and recruitment within the cost centre 
    • Responsible for development and delivery of weekly and monthly cost centre reporting
    • Responsible for the cost centre Risk Management process and inputs into the company level risk process
  • Research & Development
    • Responsible for developing the R&D strategy to enable HICSE to meet it’s company strategic aims and successfully win programmes
    • Working with other Hitachi Group companies, customer stakeholders, industry and academia to ensure HICSE products, strategies, tools and methods remain up to date and HICSE is able to continue to influence industry
    • Represent HICSE at company level to industry, academia and Hitachi Group level
    • Responsible for the development and maintenance of Product Roadmaps in line with company strategy
    • Responsible for the approval of all Project Management and Technical Plans within the R&D department
    • Responsible for the approval of all R&D cost estimates (e.g. variations, new projects and proposals)
    • Responsible for the development and maintenance of the R&D processes within the BMS
    • Responsible for development of prototypes to TRL3/4 for sales and business development purposes
    • Responsible for working with other cost centre leads to ensure lean and timely delivery of project work and business improvements
    • Responsible for representing the Research & Development at the Senior Management level
    • Accountable for projects’ adherence to the HICSE Business Management System
    • Supporting bidding activities with the sales function
    • Reporting to management to ensure communication of the state of play of all aspects of the R&D department.
    • Effectively managing all stakeholders in the company to ensure successful deliveries.
    • Accountable for the delivery of projects to time and budget.
    • Accountable for ensuring the technical aspects of all R&D projects are fit for purpose.
    • Ensure the smooth running of business as usual activities in the department.
