International Women’s Day provides an opportunity to acknowledge the accomplishments of women and encourage the support of women’s rights. Beginning in 1908, working conditions for female garment workers were protested in New York. Today, International Women’s Day embarks on various missions including women at work, women in technology, women’s empowerment, women’s health, and more…
This year the theme, ‘embrace equity’, aims to encourage conversations surrounding the inadequacy of only providing equal opportunities. The term “equity” refers to fairness and justice and is distinguished from equality where the same is provided to all. Equity means recognising that we do not all start from the same place and must understand and adjust for imbalances.
Within the workplace, 73% of women experience bias which negatively impacts women’s ability to get hired and promoted. As part of our support for International Women’s Day this year, our colleagues discussed how each one of us can actively support and embrace equity within our sphere of influence as well as reduce bias for an inclusive work environment.
Jenny Garrett OBE discussed methods to embrace equity: companies can offer flexibility and set female representation targets while individuals can ask for personal feedback regarding bias and support women online.
